Lebenslauf

Marc Battier is an electroacoustic music composer who has been involved in computer music composition since 1970.

Battier's graphical scores have been exhibited in art galeries in Paris. His electroacoustic music has been played in most countries of Europe, Japan, China, South Korea, Taiwan, and North America. His music often deals with the voice, with poetry and with painting.

Has worked at Groupe de recherches musicales (France) as computer music assistant to Francois Bayle in the late seventies, then at IRCAM (France) where he worked with Pierre Boulez, Steve Reich, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Henry, Joji Yuasa and other prominent composers. His music has been commissioned in France by INA-GRM, IRCAM, the French State, GERM, GMEB; in the USA by Massachussetts Arts Council, in Japan by Xebec Hall, in Hungary, in the UK and in China by the Musicacoustica festival. His music has been performed, amongst other ensembles, by Itinéraire, Ensemble intercontemporain, and 2E2M.

He is professor and chair of musicology and electroacoustic music at the university of Paris Sorbonne, and director of the research group MINT. His research focuses on the historical and stylistic development of "artificial sound" and electroacoustic music and has co-founded a learned society in this field, the Electroacoustic Music Studies Network (www.ems-network.org).

Battier is also involved in research on the organology of the 20th century. In 1992-93, he designed the collection of electrical and electronic musical instruments for the Musée de la musique (Cité de la musique, Paris) and remains on the acquisition board of the museum. He is the founder of EMSAN (Electroacoustic Music Studies Asia Network; www.omf.paris- sorbonne.fr/EMSAN), an international research network for the study of electroacoustic music from East and South-East Asia.
