Wave Field Synthesis at the TU Berlin

The lecture and event hall WellenFeld H104 (WaveField H104) at the Technische Universit├Ąt Berlin houses the world's largest wave field synthesis (WFS) system. Around the entire hall, with a capacity of approx. 640 seats, a band of over 2700 speakers at 0.1 m intervals runs at head height. The speakers are controlled by a computer cluster with 832 audio channels.

Unlike conventional multi-channel playback systems where sounds are simply transmitted through one or more speakers, in wave field synthesis the field of the sound waves is calculated and generated according to the sound sources fixed (or moving) positions in the room. This allows the creation of specific acoustic conditions whose perceived auditory impression deviates from the listener expectations based on the size and acoustic properties of the real surrounding space.

The most striking characteristic of wave field synthesis is that sounds can be generated as virtual sound sources at discrete positions within the given space without being associated with real physically (visible) objects such as concrete loudspeakers or instruments. With the WFS system in WellenFeld H 104 a vast number of virtual sound sources can be defined, positioned or moved both within and outside of the real space of the lecture hall.
