Network Systems for Music Interaction

The SPRAWL System is a distributed system for musical performances in local or remote networks, developed and tested in previous seminars at the TU Studio (related LAC paper). Musicians use Raspberry Pi-based access points to connect arbitrary musical instruments to a server for mixing and spatial rendering of audio signals. The architecture allows the dynamic configuration and control of the SPRAWL System, turning it into a musical meta-instrument. It evokes new ways of musical interaction but also enables rehearsals and concerts in times of travel restrictions and social distancing.
The seminar Network Systems for Music Interaction is intended both for new participants and as a continuation of the class Network Music Performance Systems. Topics include the fundamentals of Linux audio systems and details of Jacktrip as a tool for audio over IP.  In addition to the previous class, the server configuration and software will be treated. SuperCollider, Puredata, Python and other tools are used for programming the system on both the access points and the server.

Besides programming, the seminar also focuses on playing with the system. Participants are thus encouraged to bring their instrument of choice - electronic or acoustic. In groups, Students will develop an individual system configuration and present it in a final presentation or concert.

The number of participants is limited. Please subscribe to the mailing list for enroling: ak-sprawl2021

All sessions of the seminar are held online, using Zoom and the SPRAWL System itself.

  • Connecting to the server from a home network requires access to a standard internet connection via Ethernet (WiFi is not reliable for these purposes).
  • Participants can either borrow an access point from the TU Studio or purchase their own Raspberry Pi with accessories: parts list. Experienced users can also use custom hardware solutions.
