Inhalt: This seminar will offer a critical discussion of acoustical, perceptual, and cognitive perspectives on timbre and its role in how we recognize, identify, and categorize sounds. A variety of topics will be covered concerning the notion of timbre as a multidimensional perceptual construct across multiple contexts and its psychophysical representation in the auditory system, with particular emphasis on the specific scenario of musical timbre, including timbre space models, semantic models, audio content descriptors, and modulation representations for speech and music. Evaluation will be based on active in-class participation and self-conducted theoretical or empirical projects presented in class. Basic knowledge of acoustics and audio signal processing is required.
