The invention of artificial sound in the 20th century

A gradual invention of artificial sound developed across the twentieth century. Ideas on new sounds came from poets, writers, painters, film makers, music critics, and musicians, leading to what Edgard Varese called "the liberation of sound". At the same time, new sound technologies, such as phonograph, radio, amplification, microphone, led to questions of how to define new forms of creation. This not unlike what we are experiencing today with the Internet, new media and various forms of networks.

Electroacoustic music was born from these ideas, but they also affected poetry, literature, cinema and visual art. In the seminar, we will use numerous sound, visual and film examples in the evocation of the steps towards the formation of new ideas on sounds and on technology.
