Tazelaar (*1962) came in touch with the world of electronic music when
in 1981 he followed a course at the Institute of Sonology of the
Utrecht University. In 1987 he continued his studies in Den Haag at
the Royal Conservatory: two more years in sonology, to be followed by
four years in composition with Jan Boerman, with whom he graduated in
1993. Since then he is a teacher in composition and voltage control
techniques at the Institute of Sonology.
During the winter semester of 2005-2006, Tazelaar filled the Edgard Varèse guest professorship at the Technical University of Berlin.
Since June 2006 he is head of the Institute of Sonology.
Next to his own compositional work, Tazelaar has used his private studio on many occasions for the reconstructions of historically important electronic compositions by Gottfried Michael Koenig, György Ligeti, Edgard Varèse, Iannis Xenakis, Jan Boerman, Dick Raaijmakers, Tom Dissevelt and Luctor Ponse. Most of these reconstructions have been released on CD.
In recent years, Tazelaar has become more and more active as a lecturer on historical and theoretical electronic music subjects. Lectures have been presented at the Audio Engineering Society, the Philips Research Laboratories, the University of Skopje, the Dutch Acoustics Society, the University of Bath, the University of Leiden, the University of Leuven, the Van Abbe Museum Eindhoven, STEIM Amsterdam, the Hochschule für Künste Bremen, ZKM Karlsruhe, University of Technology Sydney, Transmedia Brussels, Philips Design Eindhoven, the Dutch Film Museum, the Conservatory of Amsterdam, the University of Calgary, the Design Academy Eindhoven, the Shanghai Conservatory, the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics Graz and the Kungl. Musikhögskolan Stockholm.
