Information on the Grant

In spring 2000 the Technical University Berlin, the Artists-in-Berlin Program of the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, DAAD) and rbb / Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (former station Sender Freies Berlin) created the Edgard Varèse Guest Professorship for Computer Music. It is dedicated to the various techniques and the critical reflection on computer music. Moreover, the appearance of important artists and scientists will contribute to the cultural life of the city of Berlin.

The candidates for the Edgard Varèse Guest Professorship are selected by a high-ranking interdisciplinary jury (see below) - we kindly ask you to desist from sending application letters.


The Grant

  • includes an adequate monthly stipend for the time of the guest professorship,
  • international and national travel subsidy to cover the guest professor's journey to Germany (the amount depends on the country of origin), and
  • resources for materials to be used in context of the teaching and workshops.



The invitation extends over for one semester, in total about 48 hours teaching-time. The time schedule can be flexibly arranged.

Summer term: April through July (lecture period: mid April - mid July)

Winter term: October through February (lecture period: mid October - mid February, including two weeks of christmas break in December/January)


(1) Lectures at TU Berlin  

The guest professor is a full member of the faculty at Faculty I (Humanities) of TU Berlin. The guest will choose the focus and format of the classes/lectures in coordination with the scientific staff at the department. The teaching should be related to the broad field of computer music, focused on aspects of composition and performance, musicology of technological aspects (acoustics, music informatics, signal processing). The lecture can be held in German or in English. The Edgard Varèse Guest Professor will be part of the academic staff of the Audio Communication Group, in particular by his or her student assistant.

(2) Public Events

During the Guest Professor's visit at least one high profile public appearance will be organized. This will be jointly conceived according to the wishes of the guest professor.


Travel Arrangements and Accommodation

The Edgard Varèse Guest Professor is kindly asked to organize his or her own travel arrangements. If requested we can provide organisational support. Learn more about how to find an adequate accommodation in Berlin here.

Office Facilities

The Guest Professor will be provided with his/her own desk in the Technische Universität Berlin. The office will be equipped with all required facilities (computer, internet access, telephone).


Selection Committee

The interdisciplinary selection committee comprises experts representing the institutions involved in the guest professorship. The committee includes members of the Artists-in-Berlin Program of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Electronic Music Studio of the TU Berlin, the Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb) and the University of the Arts (UdK) in Berlin.
