Local Networks for Musical Interaction in Ensembles

We will explore a variety of real-time musician-to-musician interactions primarily “within ensemble.” The course will encourage musical experiment and be progamming-based, allowing the use of Puredata, Python, Supercollider, as well as C++ and Faust software libraries for DSP, GUI and project development. The hardware platforms for the course will be Raspberry PIs with additional touch screen and audio interfacing options. All tools are open source. The end of semester outcome will be ensemble performances utilizing student-designed interactions. As an ensemble itself, the class will practice group coordination and listening skills while performing. Improvisation sessions and presentation of pieces chosen by the members will complement the technical work. Theoretical topics will include programming architectures for real-time computing of sound, real-time protocols for sound over networks including Jacktrip and OSC, and tools for code sharing and version control. The weekly schedule of meetings, including labs, rehearsals and listening sessions is to be determined.

The class will be taught every second week and includes 2 additional dates for developing performances which will be presented at the end of the semester:

  • December 14, 12:00-18:00
  • January 25, 12:00-18:00

The class is taught in conjunction with
The Electronic Orchestra: Exploring Concepts for Network Interaction [1]
and can/should be combined with
Online Jamming and Concert Technology
[2]for the modules MSc-AKT 9 a/b/c.

Interested students should assign to this mailing-list [3] (shared with the Electronic Orchestra [4]Seminar). The number of students for this course is limited. You get a confirmation from the list-admin.
